Mentoring or coaching, which one rocks?

Managing is making sure people do what they know how to do, Training is teaching people to do what they don’t know how to do but needs to do it,
Mentoring on the other hand is showing people how people who are really good at doing something do it.
Counselling is helping people come to terms with issues they may be facing, Obviously coaching is non of these.
Coaching is helping to identify the skills and capabilities that are. Within the person, and enabling them to use them to the best of their ability.
Professional coaches use a range of communication skills such as targeted restatements, listening, questioning clarifying etc. This is effectively used to help clients shift their perspectives and thereby discover different solutions to achieve their goals. These skills are used when coaching clients in any field.
Coaching therefore is a Meta-profession that can apply to supporting clients in any human endeavor, ranging from their concerns in personal, professional, sport, social, family, political, and even spiritual dimensions.
Next time hire an coach, first let that coach.

Why companies suucced!!

There are a myriad of reasons while organizations succeed, but complex and computational modeling have little or nothing to do with how companies succeed, a leader with vision, a good business process management, adoption of lean processes, history have shown that the “companies or organization tagged with excellence are seldom called same after less than a decade, numerous examples of failed organization shows clearly this fact.
While browsing through one of my favourite source of the future of business (Frank Feathers Futurebiz. Site, I was actually thinking about how great companies are built, I also read “Good to great” by Jim Collins a book so good at what needs to pull a mediocre (Organization) success to great success.
My thinking this morning is a simples effect of bringing some good people together to create a great company, great leaders can get other great leaders to form a great company,
great leaders can simply gather other great leaders, I think great leaders are called so, because they can bring together and nurture other great leaders.
Think of an organization, that brings so many entrepreneurs together and have a common vision and organizational goal, think of each leader having a complimentary business skill-set, the CEO as the agreegator of others with profound managements skill-set, have an articulate eye for numbers and details, the CIO knows technology inside out, and can boast of creative ideas of bringing out a commercial sense of every emerging technology, in this hierarchy-less model organization, the COO is flawless in operations and all motives is geared towards creating sync with and within what the CEO and CIO are doing, directed towards goals set the organization.

All other member will be selected with different and certain complimentary entrepreneurial skill-set to move the organization to desired goals within a set timeline, the volume (of value) to be created will be likened to a mutation of atomic bomb that multiplies itself in few seconds, “BOOOOM” what you see is a “great company”

Why Nigeria should be worried

My thinking is that the leadership of Nigeria is being either extremely insensitive or totally ignorant to the global trends of the industry, they are busy fighting for who controls majority of the funds from oil and gas unfortunately oil and gas is Nigeria’s predominant revenue earner, Nigeria’s budget is predicated upon almost only earnings from the oil and gas sales, its very amusing to know that the true status of quantity of production of crude oil may actually not be known, suffice it to say we may be surprised to also know that the quantity of stolen crude may be well over alleged estimates stated by the OIC’s and the Nigeria government.

There have been debates upon debates during the reading for the passage of  the petroleum industry bill (PIB)on the floor of the Senate Chambers in Nigeria,  to the extent that Senators where almost at the point doing physical, they where heavily divided amongst Northern senators and Senators from the Niger delta region of the country .

Nigeria senators and legislators are fighting over passage of the petroleum industry bill, little do they know that the revenue from crude oil may in a short while dwindle so much that it may be impossible to continue to fund budgets premeditated on sales of crude oil.

Severally Nigeria is plagued with war against itself and development is far cry from expectations, for me i think  leadership is a major issue,  the international press keeps calling Nigeria a land-of-no-tommorow (as amusing as it is, yet so scary), we really need to be worried because revenue from oil in Nigeria  accounts for 80% of government revenue and 95%  of foreign exchange reserves,

Impending Falling Demand and lower competitiveness:

The international news media Reuters also reported indication of Nigeria’s competitiveness and eventual reduction in demand for Nigeria oil by one of  Nigeria’s biggest crude oil buyer The United states of America,  i have observed the huge  discovery of oil in the US using a technology known as Fracking (or hydraulic fracking), crude oil production in the United States is surging. From a low of 5 million barrels per day in 2008 output has shot up in a hyperbolic curve to 7 million bpd  with this level of production, the US is moving to be totally independent on oil imports, It is even rumored that export of crude oil and gas is inevitable and  some industry players are applying for export license

The U.S. accounted for 35 percent of oil exports from Nigeria in 2011. But it imported around 40 percent less last year, taking purchases from Nigeria to their lowest in over 20 years, according to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), a U.S. government agency. It is also reported that this drop in demand has already resulted in Nigerian barrels selling for around 40 cents lower than its official selling price and left dozens of cargoes unsold and rolled over to future months, according to research by Ecobank,  this is obviously not a good news for Nigeria, don’t we need to worry?

A big issue is that the growing East African oil and gas industry will prove to be a serious competitor, especially given its proximity to key Asian markets compared to Nigeria.”

There have been around 70 discoveries in sub-Saharan Africa in the last five years with the majority coming in East African countries like Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique.

Around 250 trillion cubic feet of natural gas may lie off those three countries alone, the US Geological Survey estimates.

Several East African LNG plants are expected to come online in the next 5 years, while Nigeria with similar gas reserves has stalled a new LNG project (Brass LNG) for the last 8 years, seeing oil major partners Chevron and Conoco give up stakes.

Why are the international Oil companies divesting from Nigeria?

We may have other reasons for the further divestment of the international oil companies from Nigeria ( you may read an account for why they are divesting) but it has continued unabated with the announcement from Brazils  Petrobraz trying to sell off $5B of assets hopefully in the next 2 months just few days ago

I have recorded some of those trends for example  In 2010, Shell started the selective divestment of some of its Nigerian assets, with its partners, Total and Agip Oil (NAOC) announced the sale of their 45 percent interest in the onshore block OML 40 to Elcrest Nigeria Limited

Sinopec also purchased oil and gas assets from Total for a total sum of 2.5B dollars

Oando have agreed to acquire assets of conoco-phillips in Nigeria  for $1.7B

Why Nigeria investment soars both fails to fight poverty and infrastructural development

Have you ever wondered why we are having fiscal growth and this is also failing to fight poverty? i think this may stem from the fact that the government need to give attention to major changes in infrastructure and Agriculture, i may not have the exact figures of what the government have done so far on these sectors, but evidence on ground shouts to the fact that more needs to be done and a time line for results of these efforts should be a major concern.

Nigeria is presently the second largest economy in Africa, a top oil producer comparatively  has low debt by international standards and projected growth of around 7 percent for the next four years – a magnet drawing in both foreign direct and portfolio investors.

Nigeria’s economic growth has averaged about 7.4% annually over the past decade, creating a wealthier Nigerian elite with a large spending power. At the same time, however,  robust economic growth has not reduced poverty in the country, with about two thirds of its population living on less than N160 per day which translates into less than $1 per day

The international press reports that Oil production continues to attract large inflows. Shares in banks and in firms selling consumer goods to the continent’s most populous nation are outperforming emerging market peers, this clearly is a good story.

I also hear investors are reluctant to put money in value creating and long-term job-creating areas like education, agriculture and manufacturing, until our President makes good his promises to reform properly the power sector, Roads and the food industry, i think investors will begin to care when these sectors are taken care of.

It is interesting to note that agriculture employs around 60 % of Nigeria’s 160 million people, and makes up 45% of the GDP compared with  15%  for oil and gas industry which is known to not being able to spread wealth evenly, hence it caters for only a select and corrupt privileged few.

Although severally the presidency refutes the idea that the insurgency and terrorism being experienced  in Northern Nigeria is caused by Poverty and years of misrule, i think this is the problem, John Campbel epitomizes Nigeria situation in his write up, “how to undermine Nigeria’s growing islamic threat”  he goes on to say “Boko Haram attacks have escalated and grown more sophisticated, drawing on masses of unemployed youth”. Unemployment is a resultant effect of lack of vision and direction of leadership.

I think that we Nigerians really need to worry about what is going on in our land and find a way to recreate the future that we will love our children to inherit ultimately,  without sounding too politically naive we may not be getting the best from our current lots in leadership, apparently some things needs to change, maybe the leaders themselves can change strategy and begin to create a country that can rightly become the largest economy in Africa, we do not have to condescend wrongly to the lowly position of the second largest economy in Africa, we have the population, we have the “skilled” man power, maybe we should also have skilled leadership to help the navigation to the top, the world is coming to Africa we need to welcome them.

Recall recent events in some other African countries like Ghana, they are more proactive in making sure that their new discoveries should not be a poison to them on the long run, they have started well and made outstanding progress so far, they are seriously learning from Nigeria’s mistakes of the past and “present,”  believe me they are learning from our current  mistakes.

Try Getting older and Getting better!!!

I. Wanted to share this story before I sleep, Most of us have learned that we better take care of ourselves because our. Days are numbered. But I have to also. Share that if we treat our bodies right the improvements can be astonishing.
Hulda Crooks lost her. Husband when she was about 60years old her own health was going bad and her doctor told her that if. She didn’t get an exercise she would soon follow her mate, she took him seriously and began to walk, increasing distance everyday, then she began hiking. She started following the trails of. Mount san. Gorgornio, near her home. In Southern California, eventually she tackled Mount whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous 48 states. By the time she is 91 years she had hiked to the top of Mount Whitney and back 23 times.

Another is Jack. Lelanne. Somehow he learned that. After 30years of age we loose 2% of our muscle mass every year, when. We are about 70 or so we don’t have the. Strength to get out of a chair, He was the first exercise guru on TV- this is. Probably more than 50 years ago, when he was 45 years old he completed 1,000 push-ups and 1,000 chin-ups in less than an hour and half, (I am not sure I can get 1000 in a week, maybe someone reading this cannot do one) at 60 years he shackled his wrist behind him and tied his ankles together and attached himself to a 1000pound boat that he pulled, porpoise-like, from. Alcatraz to fisherman’s wharf a distance of about 70 miles, at 70 years hands and feet similarly shackled, he towed 70boats with a person in each for almost 2 miles, across long beach Harbour. At 80 he was going to do same thing with 80. boats, but we hear his wife put her foot down.
Our bodies are indeed wonderfully made! If we are growing older and concerned about our health going downhill, why not start treating your body right? Who knows what possibilities. God has created within us? The better we treat our bodies to some storm of exercise, the better!!! Ponder on this good. Night ( Good morning) !!!!

My Top Ten-to-do list for a productive day

Over the years i have always wished people cultivate the simple habit of creating value, you may ask how can that be? not far from what everyone know as “value” in other words be useful to your self and ultimately to your organization, some individuals are great thinkers and will see outside the box all the time, some see all the opportunities inherent in the most passively negative issues and circumstances, let’s not delve into people that sees the negatives, i do not have time for that here. over the years i have basked in the idea of creating teachable systems where people will be amenable to being taught processes and making them adaptable to creating something out of nothing.
i have taken to having a twitter handle to send lots and lots of message of what excites me on a daily basis including useful quotations,  creative ideas, fun times with family and entrepreneurial traits that could help any budding business person, as distracting as they are i do that daily and i am happy i do especially sharing those useful insights that “HELPS”.
If you know and observe a problem the best person to undertake to solve that problem is you, i have known this over the years hence i am advocating in this article some useful tips of what i keep as my to do list on a daily basis, it may be of immense benefit to you you also.
I’ve always been focused on performance. I’m a list person. I love the feeling of crossing things off. It makes me feel productive. Plus, consistent productivity has the wonderful byproduct of accomplishing more. You don’t wait to do the work until you get the dream job – you do the work in order to get the dream job.

I’ve never shared this list with anyone before.

It’s the list of ten things I try to do every workday. Yes, there are days when I don’t get them all done, honestly most times I leave it there and replace it in the next day’s list but I do my best to deliver. It has proven very effective for me. They are:

1. Read something related to my industry
2. Read a chapter in any of my business related books (i have many unread though)
3. Send two emails to touch base with old colleagues, especially my friends overseas that we hardly see face to face
4. Search through my emails and even visit spam to be sure no hanging nice information is waiting to be attended to
5. Check in with each of my organizations team leader/member on their progress.
6. Have a short non-work, humor related conversation with any visibly available employee.
7. Review my top three goals for my company that are focused on its growth.
8. Identify and execute one task to support each of my top three goals.
9. Post five valuable pieces of content on all my 2 major social media accounts.
10. Review what i have being able to achieve so far and its consistency with my business plans, finally thank God for the day.
This list most of the time is more than 20, but the 10 I have above are quite consistent with me over the years and i am sure some of us may have a longer list…

you might have a longer list but be sure you have the integrity to carry through 70% and create this list in your mindmap you do not have to flip through your to-do-list all the time, keep them in your memory, i have to practice mnemonics to help me keep long lists and exercise my brain for retention purposes.

Vulnerability is a gateway to strenght, the living creed!!

Keep this to heart always when you do what you do, when you act what act, I just saw this this morning and I think its a wisdom worth sharing from Jonathan Fields, the living creed!!
